Our knowledge of the brain is evolving at a breathtaking pace, and Dr. Lara Boyd is positioned at the cutting edge of these discoveries. In 2006, she was recruited by the University of British Columbia to become the Canada Research Chair in Neurobiology and Motor Learning. Since that time she has established the Brain Behaviour Lab, recruited and trained over 40 graduate students, published more than 80 papers and been awarded over $5 million in funding.

Dr. Boyd’s efforts are leading to the development of novel, and more effective, therapeutics for individuals with brain damage, but they are also shedding light on broader applications. By learning new concepts, taking advantage of opportunities, and participating in new activities, you are physically changing who you are, and opening up a world of endless possibility.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

just from reading comments down here , its another interesting fact that how todays society sucks and how people ignore the process about how our brain works and just focus on the result or the expected result they wanna hear.
people have grown more ignorance towards everything in the world , pretending they know stuffs but thats just another reflection of „they only understood what they’d understand“ indeed

After reading this comment, all I can say is how can you be so close minded. It’s HIS opinion, not yours. You obviously have your own opinion. He is entitled to think whatever he want whether it is viable or not. So no his opinion is not wrong. Only people with low-self pride will tell others they are WRONG for believing something.

Ill start with this. The only reason a 65 year old man would believe he can not do it is because you and all of society said it wasn’t possible.

Are you familiar with the story of Sir Roger Bannister? It was said to run a mile in under 4 minutes is physically impossible. They said „you would be crazy to even try“, Which is essentially the point of view you have in the comment above. In 1954, he did what was said to be impossible. Ran a mile in 3 minutes and 59 seconds.

Never and impossible are just negative words to tell people that their dreams are unachievable.

Then you stereotype this old man as in he is not very intelligent because he is a truck driver? Really? So because he has a job to support himself or family, whatever the case may be, he’s ‚average‘?

These negative outlooks are the biggest culprits of pursuing failure. If you always believe you’re going to fail then you will.

There is definably not enough evident information about the brain and the its true capabilities to assume it’s ‚impossible‘. You know the term ‚innocent until proven guilty‘, well that very much applies here. Possible until it is proven impossible.

Food changes the chemicals in the brain, so does the way you breathe, so does fear. In fact, any „Emotion“ can change the chemicals in the brain, as well as many other aspects of physiology. You want to drive an academic in the STEM subjects crazy, just ask them where „Thoughts“ come from.

  19. The video was in a way not for everyone. Have you ever wondered why a simple answer turns into a 15 minute video on youtube? Turn on the captions and capture the key words in her message. You have to understand public speakers. As an expert in her field, she is actually endorsing her skills, field of expertise and the research facility in British Columbia. Research facilities require marketing to promote the proper funding in the future for example. By me explaining this, maybe you will understand the importance of keywords and in short hopefully promote a healthy brain of learning new things!

  20. Jackie S- Feeling ‚bored‘ affects your short term and long term mental memory capacity and affects your learning ability. Doing something productive, either what you’re passionate about or out of your comfort zone will vastly improve the chemicals in the brain. You’ll begin to develop more passion by learning and developing new interests that will improve your mental state so all the above will begin to build the structure over time in your brain.

But, in the same spirit of argumentation, trying to separate the voice from the speaker is not only difficult, it’s foolish. One does not have to judge, or not judge, her beauty to hear her message appropriately, either. We should take responsibility for the way we look, too. Based on what she’s saying, ironically enough in your case, we have more control over our brains than we might think.

    +Elaine Gray,

Answer is BIG BANG & the life is result of Chemical reaction. Are you asking before BIG BANG? Scientists even talk about the possibility of Multiverse, means more than one Universe. So, we even don’t know where the beginning is and about which beginning you are asking for.
The simple ANSWER is, we DON’T know! It’s that simple.

But not knowing something is not the reason to conclude that there is God or Creator. It does not make any sense. For example, imagine that there was life on MARS and you are coming from MARS; looking at a pregnant woman giving birth to a baby on EARTH, you can’t say that the reason of the new born baby is the God just because you don’t know how reproduction system works and intercourse is its reason.

you know when you are away from God. and sheatan is closed to heart then he will divert people in differen way. he will show diffrent way and away from GOD. You know shetaan run in the veins like blood. so we should think about the creator then body chimical and psyical changes in good way, may God Guide us in good way and make us close to our creator. so our mind stae should be clear.

  52. The point is you have the power to CHANGE your brain through behavioral habit. This is huge because it was always believed after you become an adult you were stuck with what you have. This means that a 65 year old truck driver could become a world class violinist IF he puts in the time for behavioral habit. If you can’t see the value in that message then, well, enjoy a dull life.

  58. Tahira Sam sagt:

The best way keep brain healthy keep God in your life. And encore of God in life is positive behavior.science also has revealed that bow down your head to God.when you surrender and bow down you head to God al mighty the hidden truth is
Blood from your spine and from your body will go the brain veins. In that way your brain gets more oxygen and free from clots. And memory increases. You will more calm and in peace.
Look at all Muslims they’re brain. Their children and adults memories the whole holy book ( Quran). They bow Down their head 5 times a day. Only who bow down. Not all of them.
